Wonder and Awe

I have been planning this surprise for my kids for ages and on Friday night the stars finally aligned!!! As part of the Perth Fringe Festival in the Cultural precinct, there is a large tank set up. Every evening until the 24th of February at 6pm (see link below ) 2 mermaids come into the tank and interact with the many children who come to visit.

It certainly was a surprise!! While Miss 7 is at a point where she is “too cool for school” her response was “Thanks mum, I’ve always wanted to see fake mermaids. But I was actually hoping the surprise was going to be an icecream.” [An icecream would have been so much easier than taking 5 kids under 6 into the city solo!!!] The cool exterior was soon dispelled as she was absolutely enamoured by these gorgeous creatures who clearly loved interacting with the kids.

If you are looking for something free and different to do with your kids, check it out 🙂

Hello Everyone,

Yes it is THAT time and the nagging has begun!! Whilst the office is being inundated with orange re-enrolment forms, there are still a few out there who have not brought theirs back. Please, please, do so soon so that the lovely Kristen and I can begin the exciting task of casting and co-ordinating our Year End Shows.

All of the teachers and Principals of the 5 WA branches of Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, met on Saturday, for a run through of next term’s play. We cannot wait to share the energy and enthusiasm with the students as we go about making some amazing memories 🙂

I will be out visiting in the coming weeks, I look forward to seeing you (and your ORANGE FORMS) soon.

Introducing the Introduction

I thought today I might tell you all a little bit about what happens at the beginning of one of our lessons and why I love it!!!

After the roll is called, children jump up and listen to the teacher outline a situation. This situation is usually “dramatic” and always calls for a change of emotion and an interesting freeze at the end.

At the first signal the entire class says a given line together, then they ad-lib about the given situation, or ‘walk and talk’. To an observer, this probably looks quite chaotic, as twenty kids move around the space, often in a crazy way to match the situation, and the noise is amazing! However, as a teacher this is my favourite part of the lesson. It is the sound of growing confidence as the children participate in this activity and learn to express themselves through their own words and body language. They are creating their own multiple sentences and flowing language. To me this is the not only the sound of fun but most importantly, it is the sound of learning. There is nothing more satisfying than to hear this cacophony – this is the sound of the children truly ENGAGING in an activity. This is when it is easy to see that these life lessons our programme teaches, will remain with the children long after the lesson is over!

Newsletter and Orange forms

Yes it is that time of term again where my FAVOURITE colour is splashed over your fridge, desk or noticeboard!!!! Orange forms are out, please help myself and the lovely Kristen get organised for Term Four and the Year End Show by getting these forms back ASAP 🙂

Also, just a reminder that if you are paying your deposit by direct debit, please, please, please staple a copy of your receipt to your orange form. For some strange reason the last two terms a lot of direct deposits have been showing up as “Agent 1985”!?! I am quite sure that none of you are secret agents so to save me having to chase the “agent” I would love to see the receipts.

And finally, please confirm for your wonderful children that they are, in fact, amazing and will recieve certificates when they  complete every year with the Acadmey.

Week 6-Really?!?

Can you believe how fast this term has gone? There has been so much energy and excitement in all of our studios, it is an absolute pleasure to visit classes as well as teach my own. When I am out visiting I can’t help but get excited about the contribution that the students will make to our year end shows. It is wonderful to see how all children are engaging in class activities with enthusiasm, and really giving a hundred percent. This creates such a bubble of excitement in my tummy as I think about how we, and our teachers get the opportunity to play a part in the creation of some pretty fabulous memories!! Our year end shows are such an exciting and inspiring time – a time where we get to “show off” our wonderful students. If the last few weeks are any indication, our year end shows will be AMAZING!! I am looking forward to continued enthusiasm as we finish this term, and can’t wait for our Term 4 and the adventure that we get to go on together.
